Driver killed, passengers hurt as Tamil Nadu bus rams into KSRTC bus

The speeding SETC bus reportedly strayed onto the wrong lane

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The driver of a KSRTC bus died and several passengers injured when a Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) bus rammed into it at Inchivila near Parassala Thursday morning.

The KSRTC bus attached to Parassala depot was on its way from Kaliyikkavila to Medical College around 6.15 am when the speeding SETC bus from Chennai hit it at a curve here.

The driver, Abdul Khader, 35, of Cheramal Bhagom House, Poovattuparamba, Kozhikode, had just started duty when the mishap struck.

The speeding SETC bus reportedly strayed onto the wrong lane. Under the impact, the KSRTC bus was pushed back around 50 metres, and the seats behind driver’s cabin got ripped off.

Mr Khader was trapped under the debris and his body was taken out by a fire and rescue team. He leaves wife Rubina and two children.

“The long distance buses routinely engage in rash driving on the Parassala-Neyyattinkara stretch causing mishaps at Inchivila, Parasuvaikkal and Udiyankulangara areas,” police officials said.

Police identified the injured on KSRTC bus as Shantha, 51, and Maniyan, 60, of Neduvanvila, Shyam, 25 of Vattappara, Santhosh Kumar, 36, and conductor Jayachandran, 48.

The injured on the other bus were driver Jyoti, 56, Gokul Swamy, 20, and Neelaram, 20. They were admitted to the Medical College Hospital.

Few others who suffered injuries after being hit by metal pieces and flying glass shards were given first aid at Neyyattinkara District Hospital, police said.
