Diamond hunters eye last catch
A team to search for diamonds from Gujarat is camped at Kollur for the last 20 days
Kollur (Bellamkonda mandal, Guntur): Diamond hunters are back in Kollur, Guntur district, which once produced world famous diamonds like the Kohinoor, Great Moghul and Hope. As the diamond belt with several villages including Kollur, Pulichintala and Gollapalli villages on Guntur side are to be submerged from water from the Pulichintala project, diamond hunters are attempting to make one last sparkling harvest.
A team to search for diamonds from Gujarat is camped at Kollur for the last 20 days.
The team includes Sundhu Gurjeet, a stone expert, Mangalore Singh, a bike mechanic, and Deepak Kumar, a cook with a little bit of experience in the field of civil engineering. They took assistance from Subhani, a local person, who knows the area and is providing bike and other facilities for the team.
The area is situated in a reserve forest.
Asked by this correspondent, Mr Gurjeet said, “The earth around the spot where diamonds lie would be blue. That is one of the key identification marks to find the diamond at the first instance to pick up the stone for testing”. They have brought diamond detecting equipment.
“The diamond selector has a 10-point scale which explains the nature of the stone. When we test the stone on the diamond selector, if it reaches to the tenth point on the scale, then surely it is diamond and we can take it granted. If the selector shows below one point on the scale, then that is not even a stone. Then we will check the stone with the diamond detector which reveals the quality of the diamond,” Mr Gurjeet added.
