Collector P Bala Kiran to meet residents over land re-acquisition
KANNUR: Kannur district collector P. Bala Kiran will meet at 3 pm Friday the local people protesting against the re-acquisition of land given as part of rehabilitation package for Kannur airport.
Along with the local residents who had given their land, Kannur International Airport Limited officials, Mattannur Municipality officials and the action council they formed will take part in the reconciliation meet.
The re-acquisition of the land is part of the runway expansion of the airport from the present 3,050 metres to 3,400 metres.
During the first phase of the land acquisition, the government had not offered any rehabilitation package for the residents.
However, during the second phase, due to the protest from the landowners, the government decided to give 10-cent land each.
The land allotted for them was near the runway and the secured area. Presently, the plan is to acquire some of the area from this land for the runway.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, the collector said the issue would be amicably solved at the meet.
“The runway expansion is a must for the development of the airport. So far, we have solved all the issues with the support of the public,” he said. A plan for building a residential complex for the landowners is also on cards.
