CM Oomen Chandy: Won’t backtrack on light metro

Fresh letter to be submitted to Centre with E. Sreedharan’s suggestions

KOCHI: Chief Minister Oomen Chandy said that ambiguities, if any, over implementing the Light Metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode would be cleared soon.

He was talking to media persons after holding discussions with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation principal advisor E. Sreedharan in Nedumbassery on Thursday.

“There are many hurdles in the project but the government is focussed on implementing the two Light Metro projects worth Rs 6,728 crore in a time-bound manner. A fresh letter would be submitted to the Centre by incorporating the recommendations proposed by E. Sreedharan. The details of today’s (Thursday) talks with the ‘Metro Man’ will be discussed during the next Cabinet meeting,” said Mr Chandy.

Meanwhile, before meeting E. Sreedharan, the Chief Minister admitted that there had been some misunderstandings on the implementation of the project.

The Chief Minister held discussions with ministers Aryadan Muhammad and V. K Ebrahim Kunju on the Light Metro projects after a review meeting on Kochi Metro.

The plan is to implement the Light Metro on the lines of the Metro Rail — as a joint venture by the State and the Centre.

Twenty per cent of the project cost will be borne by the state and Centre and 60 per cent of the cost will be taken as a loan. The expenditure on land acquisition will be borne by the State government.

E. Sreedharan had earlier complained that the State government was not in support of the project.
