CM K Chandrasekhar Rao to ‘educate’ MLAs

To use Google Earth images to explain irrigation plans

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao could turn a teacher during a planned special session of the Legislature, giving lectures to legislators on redesigning and re-engineering irrigation projects.

It will not be new for TRS ministers and legislators who attend Mr Rao’s review meetings at his camp office, where he use real-time images from Google Earth to change the design of irrigation projects.

In Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, Mr Rao volunteered to educate all MLAs and MLCs on facts pertaining to re-engineering of irrigation projects using Google Earth.

“The Chief Minister is of the view that a joint session of the Legislature can be convened for the purpose,” a source said. When contacted, a senior official of the Legislature told this newspaper that it is not difficult to arrange large screens inside the Assembly chambers to enable Mr Rao to hold his ‘class’.

“When Mr K.R. Suresh Reddy was the Speaker (of undivided AP Assembly), a special session was addressed by then President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. He had a one-hour PowerPoint presentation for which we had arranged screens inside the House,” the official said.

The Chief Minister — who depends heavily on Google Earth to get authentic information, especially on the Krishna and Godavari in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Telangana — is insisting that officials cross-check their findings, drawings, maps using the facility.

“In fact, some Opposition legislators asked the CM to also give them an idea of using Google Earth images, which led to this,” the source said.
