Telangana, Andhra Pradesh better off in ragging incidents

Ragging occurs mostly in the first four or five months of the academic year

Hyderabad: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are relatively better off in ragging incidents.

But experts say that more ragging incidents are occurring outside campuses than inside when it comes to engineering colleges.

Unless there is media attention, universities and engineering colleges are also lax while taking preventive measures or even while dealing with ragging complaints.

As per the National Anti Ragging Helpline, there were eight cases of ragging reported on the Andhra Pradesh helpline this year. It was however, only two in Telangana.

It should be noted that ragging occurs mostly in the first four or five months of the academic year.

At the time of joining, students are expected to sign an undertaking, informing them of the laws against ragging and penal action if they indulge in ragging. But sadly neither colleges nor students take it seriously.

“If colleges are not making students sign the undertaking or not making them aware about the legislations, it is an offence on part of the college,” said Mr Gautam Rao, president, Telangana Engineering and Professional College Managements Association.

The Anti Ragging Monitoring Committee, headed by Mr R.K. Raghavan, also noted that most ragging incidents took place in engineering and medical colleges though it was under control in other disciplines.
