Chennai: 21-year-old dies in bid to save drowning man

Searches by the locals and the Tamil Nadu fire, as the man was nowhere to be found
Chennai: A 21-year-old man who attempted to save a drowning man from a pond in Tiruvottiyur on Wednesday is suspected to have drowned. Searches by the locals and the Tamil Nadu fire and rescue services personnel proved futile, as the man was nowhere to be found.
S. Praveen, a resident of Saraswathi Nagar in Tiruvottiyur was walking with his friends near a pond in Siva Shakti Nagar in Tiruvottiyur when they noticed a man crying for help around 3 pm.
“All three of them jumped into the pond to rescue the man. Praveen’s friends managed to come out along with the man. However, Praveen did not return,” a police officer said.
Soon, locals rushed to the scene for aid and fire personnel were also alerted. According to a police officer, Praveen was suspected to be in an inebriated condition. “The rescue personnel went on a boat and searched for his body until dusk. But, they couldn’t locate the body. The pond is just about 10 feet deep. But it is filled with slush,” said a police officer.
Sathangadu police personnel said that they could have continued with the rescue operation late into the night, but had to call it off as a large crowd gathered on the railway tracks to witness the operation. “We did not want to take chances as if a train comes suddenly and the crowd fails to disperse, it might lead to a disaster,” a police officer said.
