Cops soon to unfold mystery as test results of 'Sheena's' femur and teeth awaited
Mumbai: Forensic experts from the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratory (DFSL) at Kalina are presently in the process of extracting DNA samples from the cells of a femur (thigh bone) and pulp of two teeth believed by the Mumbai police to be of Sheena Bora, whose murder case they are investigating. The DNA tests will not only prove if the remains belonged to someone related to the prime accused Indrani Mukerjea but also determine the gender of the deceased.
A FSL source pointed out, “DNA tests would have been easier had they sent the samples back in 2012 as the decomposed body was found only a month after Sheena’s alleged murder. The remains still had flesh on it. Now, we only have bones to deal with.” However, the source made clear they are confident of extracting a DNA sample and that it doesn’t matter if bone is three years old or thirty years old.
Another interesting fact that came to light, is that the Mumbai police chose to send those samples found by their team last Friday after exhuming the alleged remains of Sheena in forest area of Pen. The Pen police too had sent some samples from the remains to JJ Hospital back then before burying it, but those samples have not been sent to DFSL by Mumbai police, the source said.
Refusing the claim that this act was done due to the trust deficit in Raigad police officials, against whom an inquiry has been ordered by Maharashtra DGP Sanjeev Dayal, a Mumbai police official said, “We will sent the samples from JJ Hospital later.”
The Mumbai police wanted the test results in 48 hours, but sources from DFSL said it would take them around a week’s time. The labour strike on Wednesday will only add to the problems of forensic experts as Class III and Class IV employees, who are used as helpers, will not show up for work. The work, however, shall go on.
A police source on Tuesday night said they managed to trace Indrani’s first husband Siddharth Das and he has agreed to cooperate with the police investigations. As stated by the Mumbai police, Das too has admitted that Sheena was his biological daughter.
The police has already handed over blood samples of Mikhail and Indrani to the DFSL.
The police will also take blood samples from Das and send it to DFSL in Kalina to prove their belief that Sheena is the daughter of Das and Indrani.
A police source, however, made it clear that they just need a match of Indrani’s DNA with that of Sheena’s to establish the murder case.
