8 killed in Manipur arson, curfew imposed

The violence broke out after bills to regulate the influx of outsiders into the state was passed

Guwahati: In view of the growing protests and the death of at least eight civilians in the violence that erupted late on Monday in Churachandpur district of South Manipur, the state administration clamped indefinite curfew across the entire state on Tuesday.

The police said that at least two protesters were killed in police firing on Tuesday in Churachandpur, the epicentre of the protest. The police was forced to open fire as a mob tried to set a police station on fire. More than 15 protesters were reported to have been injured.

The police, however, said it was yet to confirm the total number of those injured in the violence since Monday, as unofficial reports indicated this could be more than 50 people.

The Indian Reserve Battalion and state police were called in to control the protesters.

The violence broke out on Monday soon after the Manipur Assembly passed three Bills — the Protection of Manipur People Bill, Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms Bill and Manipur Shops and Establishments Bill (2nd Amendment) to regulate the influx of outsiders into the state.
