Chimp at Mysuru Zoo died of poisoning?

Lab report reveals toxic substance in fruits

Mysuru: The autopsy report of 26-year-old female chimpanzee Mirella of Mysuru Zoo which died on June 2, reveals that the animal might have died due to septicemia and toxin related causes.

The lab reports from two centres have revealed that the food content in the animal’s stomach was found positive for organo phosphorous compounds. Hence the zoo has sent the samples for quantitative analysis to the Regional Forensic Lab.

The contents of the stomach, intestine and swabs of all organs including the heart of Mirella were sent to Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals (IAHVB), Bengaluru, Veterinary College (VC), Bengaluru and Regional Forensic Science Lab (FSL) at the campus of Karnataka Police Academy, Mysuru.

The report from IAHVB reveals that apple pieces and fruit pieces tested positive for organo phosphorus compounds and carbamates. The report from the lab at VC too confirmed the presence of organo phosphorus compounds. The histopathology of the spleen, liver, lung, heart, kidney and intestine revealed acute hepatitis and nephritis.

Zoo Executive Director, Mr B.P. Ravi said. “It is not possible to reach a conclusion on the cause of death with these reports. We are awaiting a quantitative report on the organo phosphorus compounds. Based on the cause of death-if the animal has died due to organo phosphorous content- we will initiate action against culprits as per the law,” he said.
