Police to question Lingayat leaders
Hubballi: Though resolving the mystery shrouding the murder of renowned scholar M.M. Kalburgi has become a challenging task for the police, the people from his own Lingayat community who had revolted against him may come under the scanner of the investigation team.
The police may interrogate Lingayat leaders who had issued threats to him for writing a controversial article in 1984 on the birth of Channabasavanna, the nephew of 12th century social reformer Basavanna. These leaders had protested against him in front of his residence and also tried to attack him.
Members of several aggressive fringe elements of Hindu outfits, who had posed a threat to the scholar, may also be grilled. The police has also interrogated neighbours and distant relatives to study the angle of family dispute and row over the property.
Police sources said that both assailants must be well known to the scholar. P.H. Rane, who took charge as Hubballi-Dharwad police commissioner on Monday, expressed confidence that the assailants will be nabbed soon and probe team has been questioning several people in this connection. The outgoing police commissioner Ravindra Prasad retired on Monday.
