Migration, tsunami behind drop in child sex ratio
As per the Census 2011 data, Cuddalore and Ariyalur districts have seen a significant drop in its sex ratio in 10 yrs
Chennai: The social welfare department has blamed Tsunami and migration for the drastic decline in child sex ratio (CSR) in Cuddalore and Ariyalur districts. As per the Census 2011 data, Cuddalore and Ariyalur districts have seen a significant drop in its sex ratio in 10 years.
In Cuddalore, the ratio fell to 895 females for every 1000 males in 2011 from 957 females for every 1000 males in 2001. While Ariyalur district witnessed a decline by over 50 points from 949 in 2001 to 892 in 2011. However, the state’s overall CSR has gone up to 943 in 2011 from ......... “This is due to the fact that coastal districts were affected by Tsunami in 2004 where death of children accounted for more than 600. In respect of Ariyalur district due to lack of modern employment opportunities, migration of younger families to cities has increased,” claims the policy note 2015-16 of Social welfare and nutritious meal programme department tabled in the Assembly.
A former public health director S. Elango rejected the reasons cited by the social welfare department for CSR decline in Cuddalore and Ariyalur districts. “There should be multi factorial causes for the decline,” he said.
“If migration of people is the cause in Ariyalur for sex ratio decline, then it should be the case in all districts and most states especially, Bihar and West Bengal where people migrate for jobs,” he said, wondering why the sex ratio did not go up drastically in cities. “We have to conduct in depth studies”
