Kollywood actors keep it simple

K’town stars seem reluctant to up their style game while making a public appearance
Actors from Bollywood have a sense of style that speaks for itself. Irrespective of their position in the industry, all of them appear well groomed and are seen always in stylish outfits — whether it is for an audio launch, a promotional event, or any other private affair. When it comes to our own Kollywood stars, many prefer to keep it simple, from casual to not-so-stylish costumes. Actors and celebrity stylists from the industry speak their minds on the way stars should appear in public events.
Arya, the heartthrob of youngsters, who is often casually dressed at events, opines that actors should appear stylish when they head to events. According to him, it is a wrong notion that a star who is not-so-well-dressed can earn the tag ‘humble star’. He says, “Being in the showbiz industry, I feel it is mandatory for actors to look different, as it is expected from many of our fans and well-wishers. But unfortunately, many stars, including me, are too lazy to put that extra effort to look dashing. I’m trying to change in this aspect. But that doesn’t mean that stars should don posh and expensive outfits — they should look smart and dress as per the requirement of the event. Actresses, on the other hand, are far ahead when it comes to styling and carrying themselves.”
However, there are others who believe that it’s the quality of the film and the performance of the actors that counts in the long run. Ashok Selvan, who appeared dapper in a black suit recently at the audio launch of Savale Samali, says, “It all depends on the individual’s interest and comfort. But the way a star is being looked upon in the south is different from how he is received up north. Here, I think it’s okay even if we appear in shorts and slippers. People aren’t that judgmental here. Moreover, audience or fans appreciate simplicity in the south, unlike in B’town where you can’t mess up with the costumes you wear. Finally, it is our work that speaks for us. Having said that, I feel actors should be decently dressed and make sure that they do not disrespect an event they attend with their outfits.
Popular celebrity stylist Ojas Rajani feels that actors should be well groomed irrespective of which film industry they belong to.
Ojas says that audiences look up to celebrities, hence developing a style statement is a must for them. “For an actor, grooming is very important as it fetches immense respect. Though it’s the films that keep them going, the way they carry themselves in private functions matters. These days, it is part of the package deal for attending events. Their films should speak for them, their looks while promoting a film should communicate with the audience, and they should also be able to entertain. Doing this could fetch them brand endorsements too,” she says.
Of late, the number of actors who discuss the various styles that they can incorporate while attending events has witnessed a rise, says costume designer-cum-stylist Sundari Divya. She adds that every actor is smart in his or her own way and most of them know to play up to their strengths. “Stars like Rajini sir do not have to spend time on styling and appearance as his presence itself is a huge boost for an event. However, there are others who want to add up to this energy by styling themselves. Say for instance Kamal sir — he makes sure that he appears suave at every event — be it the shirt he chooses, the way he styles his hair, beard, etc. I think there are some actors who need to work on their sense of style. Films have gone global now, so I think actors should consider working with designers and discuss their prospects for fashion and image
building.”
