Rise in juvenile crime rate a big worry in Telangana

Many involved in rapes, burglary, kidnap, rash driving in TS

Hyderabad: Most juveniles arrested in Telangana last year were involved in crimes against women and theft. While 63 juveniles were apprehended for rape, 118 were held for molestation and harassing women. More than 270 teenagers were also arrested for thefts in Telangana last year, revealed National Crime Records Bureau. Interestingly, more minors who lived with their parents were involved in crimes than homeless juveniles.

According to NCRB, juveniles were also involved in cases like murder, kidnap, robbery, burglary, and rash driving in Telangana. However, the numbers are not so high as compared to other states in these cases. Data revealed that only five teenagers were arrested for using banned narcotic drugs in the state.

Senior police officials said that most of the juveniles arrested for rape cases were aged between 15 to 18 years, and their victims too were minors. “In the first week of June this year, we arrested two minors boys, 15 and 13 years old, for raping a six-year-old girl child,” said a police officer from Saroornagar.

Majority of juveniles involved in thefts were trying to earn easy money. “In the cases we busted, youngsters developed bad habits like smoking and drinking, and when they ran out of money, they became thieves. Only few kids, mainly homeless, were found stealing for their livelihood. Petty thefts and vehicle thefts are more reported among minors,” said a senior police officials from Central Crime Station Hyderabad.

According to the NCRB, as many as 122 juveniles were sent to correctional homes, while 212 were released on probation under guardians last year; meanwhile 105 juveniles were acquitted by the juvenile justice court.
