Tech graduates held for cheating Toefl aspirants in Hyderabad

Police nabbed them just a few hours before the examination on Sunday

Hyderabad: Two engineering graduates were arrested on Sunday for allegedly cheating Toefl aspirants by promising them to leak the question paper a few hours before the examination.

Abhishek Reddy, who worked at a city based education consultancy conspired with his friends and lured students promising them questions and collected huge amounts from them. Police recovered cash, computers and mobile phones from the accused. The cops identified the other accused as Vamsi. Police nabbed them just a few hours before the examination on Sunday.

Police said Abhishek Reddy and Vamsi had completed BTech from a city engineering college. After education they were preparing to appear for Toefl. During preparation they met many students who did not qualify even after two or three attempts.

They collected details of nearly 300 such people and hatched a plan to lure aspirants by telling them that they had hacked Toefl servers and got the question papers. They contacted the aspirants through social networking sites, trapped them and collected a minimum of Rs 50,000 from each candidate.

‘They posted a message on Facebook and lured hopefuls. They prepared bogus question papers by checking previous papers and made the aspirants believe that they had hacked the servers and got the question papers. The accused did not have any access to the servers or the official mails of Toefl,” said Cyber Crimes ACP Anuradha.

Abhishek and Vamsi were involved in the scam since a year and had collected Rs 15 lakh from nearly 50 aspirants.
