Shop owner held for cricket betting, cops seize Rs 3.5 lakh cash

He contacted punters on the phone

Hyderabad: A mobile phone shop owner, who was organising cricket betting was arrested by task force officials on Sunday. He was organising betting on the ongoing Natwest T20 Series. Police seized Rs 3.5 lakh, two laptops, three mobile phones and a cash counting machine from him. The accused was identified as Ashwin Bung.

Police said that Ashwin is a resident of Begum Bazaar and is running a mobile shop there since seven years. Since his earnings were not enough he hatched a plan to earn something extra through cricket betting. He started accepting betting amounts from known and unknown punters directly and indirectly.

“Ashwin operated the racket from his home at Begum Bazaar. He contacted punters on the phone and organised betting using laptops. He promised returns to the punters after completion of the match,” said task force DCP B. Limba Reddy.

Police trapped him while he was organising betting for the ongoing T20 match in England between Lancashire and Hampshire as part of the Natwest T20 series 2015. The arrested men and the seized property were handed over to Afzalgunj police station.
