Indian eves book Rio hockey spot
India took the spot on the basis of a fifth-place finish in the women’s Hockey World League Semi-finals in Antwerp last month
New Delhi: The Indian women’s hockey team were ensured a place in the Rio Olympics next year, following Spain’s defeat in the semi-final of the EuroHockey Championships in London on Friday.
England’s victory over Spain, coming after the Netherlands’ win over Germany in the other semi-final freed one quota place as both finalists had already qualified for the Olympic Games.
India took the spot on the basis of a fifth-place finish in the women’s Hockey World League Semi-finals in Antwerp last month.
The International Hockey Federation confirmed the Indian women’s qualification. India women will return to the Olympics after a gap of 36 years. India are the 10th team to qualify for Rio while the last two participating teams will be confirmed in the Africa Cup for Nations in Egypt and Oceania Cup in New Zealand in November.
