Chennai: Police on Friday arrested a 31-year-old woman who escaped with 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 3.5 lakh from a house in Nungambakkam, a fortnight ago. The accused, V. Pandirani, had joined as a domestic help in the house two months ago and made away with the valuables on August 10, police said.
The complainant, Ayishad Makiya (53), lives alone on Shenoy Road in Nungambakkam, police said. Her husband lived abroad and would visit the city from time to time. Police investigations revealed that the accused joined the house under the pseudonym, Devi after posting an online advertisement. “A friend of the victim noticed the advertisement and informed Makiya who recruited her and made her stay in the house,” an investigating officer said.
During the course of her work, Devi identified where the valuables are kept in the house and also the place where her employer keeps the keys. On August 10, when her employer retired for the day, the maid opened the lockers and fled with 50 sovereign gold jewellery and cash of Rs 3.5 lakh.
Makiya woke up the next day to find the valuables missing from the cupboard and her maid. She then approached the local police station.
A special team was formed and based on the inputs provided by the victim, cops traced the accused to her native at Palayankadu in Uthukuli in Tiruppur. She was brought to the city and the jewellery was recovered intact while the cops could manage to recover only
Rs 1.5 lakh cash from her. The accused was remanded to judicial custody. “We will be checking if there are others working behind the scenes and the accused’s involvement in any other theft cases,” said a police officer.
