No reprieve for EVKS Elangovan

Madras HC directed him to stay in Madurai and report before the Thallakulam police at 10.30 am for 15 days
Chennai: The Madras high court on Friday declined to relax an anticipatory bail condition for Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president E.V.K.S. Elangovan, which directed him to stay in Madurai and report before the Thallakulam police at 10.30 am for 15 days.
Justice S. Vaidyanathan had on August 24 granted conditional anticipatory bail to Elangovan, who apprehended arrest in connection with a complaint lodged by a former woman employee of TNCC Charitable Trust, alleging that he had assaulted her since she asked details of some accounts of the trust.
Contending that local AIADMK party cadres threw eggs and stones at his car while on his way to the police station and hence he faced threat in Madurai, Elangovan filed a petition to relax the bail condition and permit him to stay in Chennai.
His counsel R.C. Paul Kanagaraj submitted even though Elangovan had lodged a complaint with Madurai police, it was not accepted. Elangovan was a heart patient.
Hence, he may be allowed to stay in Chennai to fulfill the bail conditions.
Rejecting the plea, Justice Vaidyanathan said when the Chief Minister herself had issued a public appeal to her cadres asking them not to indulge in violence, there was nothing to worry. He then closed the petition, after making it clear that Elangovan could be accompanied by two advocates and they should go in one car.
