Karnataka: Progressive farmer to open Dasara fest

Mysuru: The Dasara Executive Committee led by Mysuru district in-charge minister V. Srinivas Prasad has come up with the much-awaited structure for this year’s Dasara celebrations.

Considering the severe drought situation in the state and farmer suicides, this year’s Dasara will be simple and traditional. It will be inaugurated not by an eminent personality but by a progressive farmer. The Gajapayana, the journey of Dasara jumbos to the royal city of Mysuru, will begin on September 4, said Mr Srinivasprasad. He was speaking to media persons after the first Dasara Executive Committee meeting here on Friday.

The Jumbo Savari will be held undisturbed. But the number of tableaux and cultural troupes will be reduced. At Bannimantap, the torchlight parade in which the governor is honoured will be held. Artistes from different states will not be invited and local artistes will perform cultural programmes at Bannimantap. The Laser show has also been cancelled.

The cultural programmes held in front of Mysuru Palace, will be conducted as usual. Earlier, artistes of national and international acclaim performed in front of the Palace. But this year only artistes from Mysuru and other districts of the state will perform.

Raitha Dasara and seminars involving progressive farmers will be held in order to instil a sense of confidence in the farmer fraternity. Flower show will also be held so that tourists are not disappointed. Due to the power crisis, the entire city will not be illuminated with only the Raja Marga and the Jumbo Savari procession route lighted up.

There will no be Yuva Dasara, Aaharmela, Women’s Dasara, Children’s Dasara and cultural programmes usually held in different parts of the city. The final draft of the programmes will be presented to Chief Minister Mr Siddaramaiah during a meeting on August 31.
