Chennai: Baby chokes over biriyani, dies
Chennai: A one-and-half-year-old child died of choking, reportedly after eating biryani at Anakaputhur near Pallavaram on Thursday night. The baby, K.Sandhya is the daughter of the Kathiresan-Nisha couple residing on Amman Koil Street in Anakaputhur.
Kathiresan (30) works as a construction labourer. On Thursday, the family prepared biriyani at their residence and Sandhya ate it in the evening. “In a few minutes, the child started to choke and swooned. The family’s attempts to save the child went futile and the child fell unconscious,” said Sankar Nagar Inspector Mohan Das. The child was initially taken to a local clinic where doctors referred her to the government hospital.
However, by the time they reached the Chromepet Government Hospital, the child died, police said. Doctors at the Chromepet GH reportedly chided the parents for feeding a baby girl with such food and informed police about the child’s death after which Sankar Nagar cops sent the body for post mortem.
“The parents initially refused to register a case and did not want the child to be autopsied,” a police officer said. However, a case of death under unnatural circumstances was registered by Sankar Nagar police and the child’s body was handed over to the parents after post mortem.
“The parents told us that they allowed the child to eat from their plate as she kept on insisting. It seems that the rice got stuck in her wind pipe which led to the choking,” Mohan Das added. Further investigations are on.
