Andhra Pradesh farmers turn into street vendors
Hyderabad: Farmers from Tullur and Rayapudi in the Amaravati zone, where the new capital of Andhra Pradesh is coming up, turned street vendors at Kothapet in Hyderabad on Friday, selling the leaves, flowers and saplings of the last banana crop in the region to mark Varalakshmi Vratham.
Several farmers who handed over their fields to the AP Capital Regional Development Authority under the land pooling scheme came to the city two days ago to sell their horticultural produce.
Mr Shaik Mukaram, a farmer from Rayapudi near Tullur, told this correspondent, “I used to own an acre of land and entered into agreement with CRDA for land pooling. We come to the city to sell our produce every year but this year is special as this is our last crop. We may not come to Hyderabad again for this purpose.”
“A large number of farmers have come here this time with the last crop as the AP government is levelling the fields,” Mr Mukaram said.
He added: “The AP government will be giving a few thousand rupees as annual compensation but it will not be sufficient,” The villages on the Krishna river side are known to grow multiple crops.
