Last-minute shopping fever causes traffic jams
Thiruvananthapuram: Though reduced footfalls were reported at Chalai area during Uthradom day, there was no end to traffic jams on MG Road until 10.30 pm as shoppers got scattered to various new shopping destinations. City police appealed to the citizens to make optimum use of parking grounds and avoid road side parking throughout the city.
For those entering East Fort and Chalai areas, Attakulangara school, Putharikandom ground and Fort School were identified as parking grounds.
Elsewhere, at Kanakakunnu confusion arose as parking was disallowed near Suryakanthi. Here citizens were requested by police to make use of Jimmy George indoor stadium compound, water authority office, one side of the Museum-Nandavanam road, Manaveeyam road and Balabhavan etc.
“We are showing leniency to slow drivers who use the right side of the road as many tend to slow down to catch a glimpse of the illumination. However, efforts should be made to clear off the road safely and quickly,” appealed city police commissioner H. Venkatesh.
Those coming to Kanakakkunnu from Palam side can avoid getting caught in traffic at Museum if they park vehicles at Arts College, University College or university office and take a long stroll.
“However, there are parking spots located at least 500 metres around all places you would want to go. So avoid wasting time to find roadside parking,” Mr Venkatesh added.
Citizens who visit Kalabhavan theatre areas and Vazhuthacaud are expected to use parking space inside Women’s College and Tagore Theatre respectively. Parking is also available at Thycaud police ground and Music College. At Poojapura, LBS ground can be used for parking.
