Database to keep track of autos in Kozhikode
KOZHIKODE: The city police plans a unique digital databank of all auto-rickshaws operating in the city to ensure safe travel for women.
It makes every detail of the city autos available for the police at the click of a mouse.
Though the auto drivers in Kozhikode are considered decent and well behaved compared to other districts, there have been complaints of overcharging and indecent behaviour recently.
Police said there was a new crop of drivers who are bringing shame to the city.
There have been complaints of not operating metres and overcharging, especially during night hours.
The motor vehicles department (MVD) had also received several such complaints in recent times.
Police decided to create the digital data bank following an increase in such complaints.
Passengers can instantly complain to the police when they are overcharged or abused.
Police would then track down the auto in no time using the digital data which includes details of the driver, owner and area of operation.
Police will initiate action against its owner as well if the driver is at fault. Every auto will get a sticker on it indicating it is part of the data bank ensuring safe travel.
Police will also ensure that the drivers wear their identity cards. They plan to collect details of some 4,000 city autos within three months.
