Bad dates can actually wreck your immune system, study shows
Having a bad date may have far more serious repercussions than just mild disappointment. It could actually cause damage to your body, a study claims. Negative dating experiences can trigger feelings of depression, make people overheat, cause stress and even lead to skin eruptions, according to a psychologist.
Dr Linda Papadopoulos explains that the stress of bad dates can cause a chemical imbalance in the body because of increased cortisol and testosterone levels, reports the Daily Mail. While increased cortisol affects appetite and food cravings, testosterone causes the sebaceous gland to secrete more sebum in the skin, which can lead to spots.
To make matters worse, since psychological stress decreases the capacity of the immune system and slows down the healing process, this means that the skin also takes longer to heal.
Of course bad dates take a toll on our psychological health as well. Dr Papadopoulos told the Daily Mail that, “Dating is an emotional roller-coaster and can really take its toll on your body and mind - biologically, psychologically and even socially.”
“Before a date you can feel nervous and anxious, which can turn into elation and passion if it goes well, or stress and possibly help foster feelings of depression if you've been matched with the wrong person,” he added.
