In my head, I have changed: Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan he tells us he’s got rid of his laidback attitude and shares a few family updates as well...
As his Phantom hits the screens, Saif Ali Khan sits down with us for a chat about his children — Sara and Ibrahim, Kareena, film choices and bringing Pataudi Palace up-to-date.
Your son Ibrahim was all over the news recently, when he posed for photos with some girls. Worried?
He is too young and he should keep a low profile and not be all over mainstream media. His mother and I have told him to focus on his studies.
Kareena told us that you try to frequently visit your daughter Sara, who’s at university in the US…
Yes, I have been there a couple of times and spent time with her. But her studies are ending within a year now and she will be back soon. She has told me that she wants to act and I will give her all the support possible.
Why are you in two minds about making a film based on the late Mansoor Ali Khan?
I know it’s a really good story and I am too close to it. It has everything that a good script needs — his journey in cricket with its rise and fall, the handicap element, the glamour, palaces… it has a very international appeal. I think it would be nice to make a bilingual film (Hindi and English). But it’s too frightening for me to attempt making a film on his life because it will be difficult to pull it off and what if I don’t do justice to it on the big screen? Also the memory of him is still raw so let things heal and maybe then I can think objectively. Also, who will act in it will be a big decision — me or someone else.
As an actor, your challenge could be to portray the teen version of your father!
Ibrahim can play him in the movie. It’s a good idea and I will let him do it.
What do you think about your chemistry with Katrina Kaif?
I think we make a good pair, don’t we?
You have got good reviews and a lot of praise for your acting in Phantom. Do you feel like a lot is riding on this film for you?
Various things are going through my mind. It is a new kind of beginning and signals a new innings for me. I felt very secure working with Kabir (Khan). He is making a different kind of cinema within the parameters of commercial cinema. Phantom is a big idea that involves a big director, a big producer. It’s in the action space and I hope the audience knows that I am capable of doing good work.
You sound like a changed man!
[Laughs] I have changed in my head and yes, there is no more laidback attitude. I realised if have to do a movie, I should do it whole-heartedly. I love what I do and somewhere it was not coming across.
What are your plans for the Go Goa Gone sequel? No actor ideally would produce a zombie film of that genre but you did it and it worked…
Yes, I want to do a sequel and we are discussing it. But all the credit goes to the director. I just green lit the project and I didn’t get paid for it! That was the only way the film was going to be made. [Laughs]
You previously told us about your plans for renovating Pataudi Palace… How is that shaping up?
Yes, it’s going on and we are bettering it by adding things like cricket photographs. I mean there was no waterproofing done for the past 110 years! It will be nice to bring in Kareena’s birthday there.
