University Grants Commission calls student elections
The Lyngdoh committee recommended conduct of student elections in all universities
Hyderabad: The University Grants Commission has asked universities to implement the directions of the Supreme Court seeking implementation of the Lyngdoh committee report submitted to it in 2006. The Lyngdoh committee recommended conduct of student elections in all universities.
In the absence of elections, students are to be represented in the decision making bodies of the varsities like the executive council and academic senate. The Lyngdoh committee cautioned that student representation, in lieu of elections, must only be an interim measure and elections are mandatory in the long term.
The Lyngdoh committee was formed in 2005 by the Union human resources (HRD) ministry based on an order by the Supreme Court. The court accepted the recommendations of the Lyngdoh committee in 2006 and directed that they be be implemented by all universities.
None of the varsities in the state are following the directions. Pursuant to this, the UGC wrote to universities asking to ensure that the Supreme Court directions are implemented fully.
