Telangana government sees Rs 1,500 crore in 90,000 illegal buildings in Hyderabad
Government is worried over whether the latest BRS would stand legal scrutiny
Hyderabad: The TS government is planning to raise Rs 1,500 crore through the Building Regularisation Scheme by doubling the penalty imposed by the scheme taken up by the YSR government in 2008.
However, the government is worried over whether the latest BRS would stand legal scrutiny given that the YSR government had submitted an affidavit before the High Court stating that the 2008 version would be the final BRS and that the government would henceforth not allow illegal buildings to come up.
To this end, the government plans to file a petition stating that the previous governments had failed to check illegal buildings and the new administration wants to rectify this by regularising old illegal buildings and will not allow any illegal building to come up henceforth.
Officials have identified 60,000 illegal buildings in GHMC limits so far, and the number is expected to cross 90,000 after final verification. Officials estimated that on an average each illegal building would fetch Rs 1.6 lakh towards regularisation fee and it is not difficult to mop of even Rs 1,500 crore, if done effectively.
