Tamil Nadu run buses to get CCTVs in phases

Need to have third eye inside buses to prevent crimes and protect people
Chennai: If the state’s finances stay afloat, soon the government-operated buses in Tamil Nadu may get CCTV surveillance. Transport minister P. Thangamani made a statement on these lines while replying to queries raised by MLAs M.H. Jawahirullah (MMK), R. Sarathkumar (AISMK) and J.G. Prince (Congress) in the Assembly on Wednesday.
“The government operates over 22,400 buses across the state. Installation of CCTV cameras on a single bus will cost Rs 25,000 and hence installation of CCTV facility on all buses will be considered only based on the financial position of the state,” the minister said, admitting to eight and six buses in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts apart from the 100 AC buses in Chennai are already running with functional CCTV cameras.
The MMK legislator also referred to New Delhi, where the AAP government has offered to install CCTV surveillance in 5,000 buses covering the national capital, to explain the imperativeness of having third eye inside buses to prevent crimes and protect the people.
