Sivaji belongs to the world, Jayalalithaa tells Congress MLA Vijayadharani

A compound wall was raised around the land given for building the memorial on February 13, 2006
Chennai: The state government will build a memorial in the city in honour of legendary actor and Dadasaheb Phalke award winning actor Sivaji Ganesan, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said on Wednesday.
The CM said she had ordered the conveyance of 65 cents of land owned by PWD in Adyar to the artists association for constructing the memorial following requests on September 26, 2002.
The land was handed over but the association later expressed its inability to bear the entire cost (Rs 4.2 lakh) of laying a separate road since a road leading to the judges' quarters was situated amid the land earmarked for the memorial, she said. The association said it could give only Rs 2 lakh and remitted the same on July 26, 2004 and the remaining Rs 2.20 lakh was borne by the government, she explained.
A compound wall was raised around the land given for building the memorial on February 13, 2006. "Had the association asked the government to build it then, I would have issued an order then itself,” she added.
Objecting to Vijayadharani's statement in the Assembly that Sivaji was once affiliated to her party, Jayalalithaa intervened and said that the legendary actor should not be confined to a small circle. "He belongs to this county, in fact, the whole world.”
