Kozhikode to get e-waste collection plant

Segregation unit to be built at a cost of Rs 1 crore

Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation will construct an electronic waste (e-waste) collection and waste segregation plant at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore near the beach.

The e-waste will be handed over to the Clean Kerala Company Limited. A decision on this was taken by the health standing committee of the corporation and is expected to be ratified during the next corporation council meeting.

Committee chairperson Janamma Kunjunni said that the Suchitwa Mission had agreed to bear the cost of construction. “The e-waste collection plants with 2,500 sq.-ft area will be coming up at the present waste treatment plant near beach road,” she said. The plant will also have segregation facility for various types of wastes and for hydraulic fracturing. The corporation will use the services of the Ayyankali Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme for collection of waste from each ward. Three workers of the scheme will be appointed in each ward for the waste collection.

Clean Kerala Company Limited, formed under the Local Self-Government Department (LSGD) of the state government, aims at hygiene management of the state through innovative and scientific methods with the participation of the public and private sectors. The agency has also agreed to collect the plastic waste from the corporation.
