Kozhikode: Beach aquarium to reopen today

Renovated facility has 100 fishes, musical fountains and seafood outlet

Kozhikode: After a long wait, the renovated beach aquarium that includes a cafetaria will be opened to the public on Thursday. The aquarium will have more than 100 ornamental fishes and other marine life in nearly 70 tanks placed at the centre accompanied with musical fountains and other exhibits of birds and rabbits.

The aquarium run by the District Tourism Promotion Council once used to attract a large number of tourists but later failed because of poor maintenance and other technical issues. It was in 1995, that the aquarium was opened to public with its impressive collection and later had to close down at several points of time.

The aquarium is located at a 15-cent facility that was leased out by the Corporation. It was later damaged by miscreants and the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities made matters worse, opined the shopkeepers near here. Later DTPC gave the contract for the renovation works to Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) in April 2012.

The renovated aquarium will have an attractive water fountain on top of the structure, a Kio Fish Pond and a seafood outlet, where a wide variety of seafood will be served to visitors. Fresh fish will be grilled and served hot to the visitors on the spot, said the organizers.
