Chennai: Indupalli Rajeshwari, a 37-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh, said she would never return to her husband, who chopped off her left wrist after a quarrel.
Her amputated hand was sent to Government Stanley hospital with cold storage preservation. After a six hour long surgery doctors here have successfully replanted the amputated part.
Indupalli said her husband was not going to work for the past three weeks and was always under the influence of alcohol. “I was angry and shouted at him. He was furious and took a knife and chopped my left wrist,” she said. She was immediately taken to a Government hospital at Guddur district where she was referred to Government Stanley hospital.
The incident took place on August 17 and she was brought to the hospital on August 18. She has three children, two sons and one daughter.
According to Dr P. Jeykumar, who led the surgery team, the amputated part was preserved properly in a cold storage which includes wrapping the part in plastic cover which is placed in a container containing ice cubes. “Because the amputated hand was preserved properly this surgery was successful. Only in rare cases are such surgeries successful,” he said.
Prof. V. Ramadevi head of department, plastic surgery, said the surgery took six hours to complete. “It was a difficult and intricate surgery. The tendons, bones, arteries, veins had to be fixed properly as they need to remain intact. The operation was done after 12 hours while it should have been done after six hours,” she said. Such surgeries cost around Rs 15-20 lakh but here it was done free with the help of CM’s comprehensive health insurance scheme.
