BBMP: Priority issues before newly-formed council
Bengaluru: “Implement whatever you promised in your BBMP manifesto. That will be more than enough!” The above is the suggestion of experts to the newly-formed BBMP council.
Experts and city residents feel that BJP, which has come to power in the BBMP for the second consecutive term, must implement all the promises it has assured in the manifesto in order to retain the faith of the general public and keep pace with the city’s development. Prof. S R Keshava, professor of Economics, Bangalore University, feels that the need of the hour is making the city more comfortable to live in. "Immediately after announcing Vijayavada as the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh, the state government has come out with stringent guidelines over their city’s development.
But such stringent guidelines are missing here. That has resulted in the disorganized development of the city. The need of the hour is a long-term action plan," he said. "The BJP had come up with a separate manifesto for Bengaluru city in the run-up to the BBMP election. It should implement it within the next five years. It is enough for the city's development," he said.
"The newly-elected BBMP council must make the BBMP free from red tape and corruption," he added. Prof. Sridhar Pabbisetty, CEO, Namma Bengaluru Foundation has identified a few key areas which are crucial for the city. "Every corporator must announce his action plan for the next five years immediately to ensure that locals will be aware of what their representative is doing," he said. As for long-term plans, Prof. Sridhar Pabbisetty informed that making the city a ‘zero waste city’ should be the priority of the BBMP.
"Out of total garbage sent to landfills, only 10% cannot be segregated or used at the ward level. The remaining 90% of the garbage can be segregated and processed at the ward level itself in the form of compost etc. This should be done," he said. "Proper budgeting, property ID for all the properties to ensure cent per cent tax collection, a foolproof system to collect advertisement revenue, are crucial for generating enough resources for the city's development,” he said.
