For 3 mins, Cubbon Park police station had PM Modi’s attention

The three-minute video conference was in Hindi and a little bit of English

BENGALURU: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a video conference on Wednesday and interacted with officials of Cubbon Park police station for three minutes. The video conference totally lasted for nearly two hours and the Prime Minister addressed issues concerning various departments, such as postal, railways, irrigation and home. He also interacted with two other police stations in Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

The three-minute interaction was in Hindi and a little bit of English, in which the Station House Office (SHO) and Police Inspector (PI), Balakrishna interacted with the Prime Minister. Balakrishna gave a presentation about how far information technology (IT) has been actually been implemented at the police station level. “The inspector gave a brief presentation about how the police IT is utilised in his day-to-day work at the station and how far it has benefited the public at large,” said Sandeep Patil, DCP Central Division.

The PM appreciated the state and the city police for implementing IT in Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) project. The CCTNS project was started nation wide in 2011, and in Karnataka it was being used in the name of police IT and other public services by the police department. “The video conferencing was done to see how far each state has worked and how much progress has been made in terms of technology and how much of success each state has achieved in implementing this technology in the police department and how far the implementation actually helped the final stake holders - the citizens,” said Sandeep Patil.

The Chief Secretary, Kaushik Mukherjee, as well as the DGP of state gave a picture as to what extent the police IT has been installed in every police station. Karnataka is one of the few states where every police station in every district have been connected online and all the police stations are interconnected with each other. Along with that, the unique features of the Sakala scheme and services were also emphasized by the chief secretary in his interaction.

‘Inspector spoke confidently’

Balakrishna, an Inspector at Cubbon Park police station, was the star cop in the State on Wednesday, when he spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Crime & Criminal Tracking & Network System (CCTNS) project, in which Karnataka police is a pioneer.

“The Inspector spoke to the Prime Minister confidently. His body language was good. He was composed as he explained the project under which all FIRs in the State are being registered online using the Police IT software and are even being sent to the courts online to expedite trials. The Prime Minister wanted to know how technology had helped the State police in tracking criminals and the Inspector gave an instant example on the computer by clicking on the name of Subramanya, and the software threw up the number of criminal cases against him. Balakrishna also explained to Mr Modi how the database on the forensic details of criminals like finger prints and biometrics has also been digitized, which help police to track the criminals anywhere,” said an official source.

The Chief Secretary, Kaushik Mukherjee, spoke to the Prime Minister on the 21 services that are rendered by the police under the citizen friendly Sakala scheme.
