Son attacked them with a sledgehammer following an argument at their residence

Chennai: An 85-year-old man was murdered and his wife suffered grievous injuries after their alcoholic son attacked them with a sledgehammer following an argument at their residence in Ayapakkam near Tirumullaivoyal on Wednesday.
The victim, Veera Raghavan and his wife, Padmini (79) were residents of 3rd street, Bharathi Nagar in Ayapakkam. The suspect, Lakshmi Narayanan, the couple’s son is an alcoholic and has no stable job. He is separated from his wife and children and is living with his parents for the past five years, police said.
“Due to his alcohol addiction, he was admitted to a de-addiction center two months ago and was brought back home recently,” said an investigating officer.
However, Lakshmi Narayanan took to his alcoholic ways again which is said to have infuriated his senior citizen parents. “Veera Raghavan chided his son on Tuesday night and reportedly told him that he would be sent back to the de-addiction center after he started asking them for money to booze,” the officer added.
This enraged the suspect who, on Wednesday afternoon attacked his parents with a hammer and fled the house. Veera Raghavan suffered injuries on the back of his head and died on the spot while Padmini suffered grievous injuries.
Tirumullaivoyal police rushed to the scene on information and moved the body to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for postmortem. The woman is also being treated at KMCH, police said. “We have launched a hunt for the suspect. The last we learnt is that he is hiding at a friend’s place near Ambattur,” a senior police officer said.
