Sweet Meat Street no more busy
KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode’s Sweet Meat Street was once known as the busiest in the district, but no more. After the disappointment of Ramzan season, the vendors here are going through a difficult phase during Onam, with very few customers coming here.
The business has come down to less than 40 percent now, Salim K.K., a shop owner said. The shops here were full with customers previously, but now the people here come for a walk. The shopping destinations have shifted to big malls and other shopping complexes, he added.
The district administration, tourism and social welfare departments had declared funds for the renovation and beautification of SM Street which are yet to be started.
According to some shop owners, when funds were sanctioned for the renovation, many protested against the decision. But the business will remain stagnant if no developments happen here, they said.
