Property dispute: Wife of ex-Star CEO Indrani Mukerjea arrested for sister’s murder
Mumbai: The Mumbai police has arrested 42-year-old Indrani Mukerjea, wife of high-profile broadcast media executive Peter Mukerjea, for allegedly conniving with her driver and murdering her own sister back 2012.
Indrani and her driver were produced before a magistrate court in Bandra (east) and have been remanded to police custody till August 31 for further investigations. DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni confirmed the arrest, “Indrani Mukerjea has been remanded to police custody. Further probe is on.” It is learnt that Indrani and her 25-year-old sister Sheena Bora were embroiled in a property dispute.
Sources said that the police received a tip-off from one of their informers that he had information on Sheena’s disappearance. He then told the police that the driver was involved in the crime and also told them that the body was dumped in the jungles of Raigad. The Mumbai police informed their counterparts in Raigad, who confirmed that the remains of an unidentified woman was found from the same spot.
A police source said that the driver was detained for questioning and grilled for nearly two days. In his confessional statement he told the Khar police that he carried out the murder on the instructions of Indrani. It is not clear if more accused are involved in the murder.
Later, Indrani was asked to come for questioning and after sustained questioning which went on for hours, she was placed under arrest. The duo has been booked under Sections 302 (murder), 363 (kidnapping) and 201 (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.
Sources said that the police is also trying to get in touch with other relatives of Indrani who they believe will throw some light on the relationship the two sisters shared. It is also not clear if there was a missing persons report or kidnapping complaint registered by her relatives after Sheena’s sudden disappearance.
A police team from Mumbai is also coordinating with the local police in Raigad to collect more information. It is not clear if the Raigad police preserved any remains or clothes found on Sheena.
Indrani married the former Star CEO back in 2002. This was both Peter and Indrani’s second marriage. Back then Indrani was an HR consultant. Later Indrani went on to become the CEO of INX Media.
