Chennai cops dither to register rape complaint, accused files anticipatory bail

The case related to a girl who was reportedly having a love affair with S. Arunkumar, of Kodungaiyur. She became pregnant.

After coming to know of this, her father approached Kodungaiyur police station on August 21 and filed a complaint alleging that Arunkumar had raped his daughter and sought action against him.

Instead of registering an FIR against Arunkumar, the police remained silent. The police had not taken the girl to a nearby Magistrate and sent her and accused to hospital for medical test.

Two days later, they handed over a CSR to her father. Speaking about the lackadaisical attitude of police in dealing with a grave crime, Jayanthy Mathivanan, former additional public prosecutor, Mahila Court, said police failed to consider the plight of the victim, who is already pregnant. The police had not produced her before a nearest magistrate and not sent her for medical test The police had not obtained a statement from the victim in the presence of woman police. The cops had also not sent the accused for medical test.
