Army officer killed in LoC firing by Pakistan
Srinagar: A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Army was reportedly killed in firing from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Tuesday.
Army sources said that an Indian forward post in Nowgam was targeted with small arms fire at 1 am, killing the officer.
He was hit by a sniper fire from the Pakistani side when he came out of his bunker, the sources added.
It was not clear if the Pakistani troops or militants were involved in the shooting which comes amid heightening tensions between the two countries and in the backdrop of a series of ceasefire violations along both LoC and International Border (IB) with Pakistan which claimed about a dozen lives on the two sides recently.
Meanwhile, based on specific information, the troops of Rashtriya Rifles and Territorial Army with J&K police carried out a joint search operation in Thatharka forest area of Gool in Jammu region and recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition from a natural hideout.
The recoveries included two old vintage UBGL, six rounds of UBGL, one round of RPG with detonator, 13 detonators, three tubes of explosives, four hand grenades, three IEDs, two magazines of AK-47 with 262 rounds of 7.62mm AK 47, a statement issued by the Army said.
