Thiruvananthapuram uses LEDs to light up festivities

Around Rs 17 lakh has been spent on illuminations — one of the prime attractions during Onam in the state capital

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city is all lighted up with colourful illuminations as part of the week-long Onam celebrations being organised by the tourism department. Almost all prime stretches in the city have been decorated with LED lights and energy conservation has been given top priority by the organisers.

Around Rs 17 lakh has been spent on illuminations — one of the prime attractions during Onam in the state capital. Some 18 generators are being used for the purpose. People from faraway places arrive in the city to see illuminations and other cultural events at various parts in the city.

Radhakrishna Kumar, illumination committee convener and deputy chief engineer of KSEB, said that illuminations are inevitable for Onam festival. Earlier, there was a decision not to waste power and circulars were issued to all public offices to minimise illuminations.

“We are using generators to ensure there is no wastage of power. Also we have insisted on LED lights to save energy,” he said.

This year more areas would be illuminated. “We have been asked to extend decorations to the areas where the wall art has come up, including the university stadium wall,” he added.
