Chennai: Five die, 22 hurt in road mishap

The late night accident disrupted traffic on the artery for more than an hour, police said
Chennai: Five persons, including an 18-month-old child, died when a van rammed into a State transport corporation bus parked along the GST Road near Acharapakkam, 80 km from here, in the early hours of Monday.
Of the dead, four, including the child, were occupants of the van. A bus passenger also died. Twenty-two suffered injuries, the police said. The government bus (route No.133) from Koyambedu here started past midnight and was on its way to Karaikudi. The van with 19 passengers of a same family was returning to Kumbakonam from Puzhal. “All of them had come to attend a function at a church in Puzhal and were returning home,” a police officer said.
Around 1 am, bus driver M.Karuppuraja (30) had halted the vehicle after a passenger who was pregnant developed complications, investigations revealed. The van driver, Manohar Raj (35), rammed his vehicle into the bus. In the impact, three occupants of the van, A.Jacqueline (36), her son, A.Rahul (10) and I.Reena (16) died on the spot. Two others, a bus passenger, A.Ramarajan (34), and the child, S. Rohit, were declared brought dead at the hospital, police said.
Police and fire personnel rushed to the scene and rescued the injured, who included the van driver. The bodies were moved to the Madurantakam Government Hospital while the injured were moved to three government hospitals nearby. Acharapakkam police have registered a case and are investigating.
