Chennai: A gang of four masked men held a driver at knife-point and escaped with Rs 80 lakh, the sale proceeds of Tasmac outlets in the city, near Neelankarai on East Coast Road (ECR) on Monday evening.
Police sources said the incident occurred near Akkarai check-post when staff of a private cash management company went to collect day’s collection from an outlet nearby around 4.25 pm.
“Three persons, staff of the cash management company went to the Tasmac shop leaving behind the cash bag with Rs 80 lakh in it inside the van along with driver Jeyaselvam (44),” according to a police officer.
Four masked men overpowered Jeyaselvam and got into the car. They allegedly held him at knifepoint and made him drive towards Puducherry. When the car reached Vedanta Swamy salai near Injambakkam along ECR, they fled along with the bag. Jeyaselvam told police that the robbers ran for some distance before getting into another vehicle which was waiting for them.
