Watch: Elephant calf rescued, but herd destroys crops

They used ropes and ramps to help guide the elephant calf out of the pit
Ramakuppam: A year-old elephant calf that fell into a pit on Sunday was rescued and reunited with its family within hours, but not before the herd destroyed several fields nearby.
Forest officials said a herd of about 10-12 elephants entered Chikkapalli Thanda in Ramakuppam mandal here on Sunday. Later, villagers noticed that an elephant calf had fallen into a pit and informed forest officials.
The elephants in the herd trampled the fields damaging several crops like tomato, paddy andgroundnut. The forest staff drove the herd away into the forest by beating drums with the help of villagers and started the rescue operation.
They used ropes and ramps to help guide the elephant calf out of the pit. Officials said the elephant was not injured except for a few scratches. It took more than two hours to rescue the calf. It was allowed to run towards the forest where it reunited with its family even as people watched.
Later, the villagers staged a protest and prevented the forest officials from leaving the place. They demanded that the officials take steps to prevent animals from destroying their crops. They relented only after they were given an assurance that officials would take preventive measures.
