Custodial Death: Injuries on thighs, legs, says admission reports
Hyderabad: Padma collapsed at 6.30 pm on Saturday at the police station but was admitted at Osmania Hospital at 11.15 pm. Doctors noticed that her blood pressure and blood sugar levels were low and administered fluids. The admission report at the hospital says, “Contusion over bilateral forearm and multiple contusions over both thighs and legs.”
When Padma’s condition did not improve she was shifted to the Acute Medical Care unit at 1.30 am where she succumbed at 6.15 am on Sunday.
Sources said the injuries on the deceased’s body were fresh and not older than six to eight hours. “Immediately we shifted her to a nearby private hospital. Later, we shifted her to Osmania Hospital,” said Asifnagar ACP Ghouse Moinuddin. After she was admitted at the emergency unit, doctors administered fluids to increase her blood sugar level, which was 77 mg/dl. But when she did not show progress and started gasping she was shifted to Acute Medical Care Unit (AMC).
“We shifted her to AMC at 1.30 am. She had injuries on her hands, legs and thighs,” said the casualty medical officer of Osmania Hospital Dr B. Shankar.
Police denies use of third degree
Police denied allegations that Padma died due to the injuries inflicted on her by them. Police clarified that she had a history of medical problems and as a result died in hospital.
Padma was sick when she was called for questioning on Friday. She was called again for questioning on Saturday. During the questioning she suddenly collapsed at the police station.
“We did not apply third degree on her. We called her only for questioning in a theft case in which she was the accused. But she was sick when she was called for questioning. We came to know through her family that she was suffering from low blood pressure and fits. She even fell down at work a few days ago. We will take action against the concerned officers for summoning her in spite of her sickness,” said south zone Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Satyanarayana.
Mr Satyanarayana is the in-charge as west Zone DCP A. Venkateswara Rao is on leave.
