Youth not keen on news via internet

46% of youth use internet for social media
KOZHIKODE: Only four percent youth use internet for getting updates on news, according to a survey conducted by the Calicut University sociology department.
Around 40 percent of students use internet for information gathering and reference while 46 percent use it only for social media, entertainment and keeping in touch with friends.
About 67 pc boys and 52 pc girls use internet for checking ‘Facebook’ and ‘WhatsApp’ applications. A total of 955 students from Kozhikode and Malappuram districts took part in the survey conducted by the MA sociology second semester students in the first week of August.
The survey says that around 48 percent of the students use social media platforms for debates on current affairs, of whom 56 percent are girls.
Of the 36 percent using social media for sharing jokes and interesting news, the majority are men. Around 16 percent of them use social media to share and spread spiritual stuff, of whom the majority are Muslim students.
The survey reveals that 34 percent of the youth think the use of social media would adversely affect the marriage relationship in future.
Around 56 percent of girls and boys feel that social media is an ideal platform for sexual abuses and 53 percent of them demand age restriction for using social media.
As many as 46 pc boys and 40 pc girls think that social media is not a secure place for sharing personal life.
Validating the point, more than 78 pc girls and 27 pc boys do not use own photo on social media platforms.
Twelve percent of boys have fake accounts on social media whereas only five percent girls have fake accounts.
