Youth chased by Kunnamkulam police drowns in well; probe into lathicharge sought
The Kunnamkulam police registered a case of unnatural death
THRISSUR: The body of engineering student Shaheen, who died after he fell into a well near Kunnamkulam on Friday night, was buried at Koottanad, his native place on Saturday.
He was a third semester electronics and communication engineering student of Royal Engineering College near Kunnamkulam.
The tragic incident occurred when Shaheen tried to escape from the police who lathicharged two groups of students in a private hostel near the college following Onam celebrations around 8.30 p.m.
As he failed to return to the hostel later, his friends went in search of him and found his body in the well.
Shaheen is the youngest son of Hamza and Fathima. He has two brothers Shajeer and Shabeer and a sister Shemina.
A large number of students and others gathered at Karimbadathdathil house when the body was brought home after post-mortem in Thrissur Medical College on Saturday afternoon.
A tense situation prevailed in and around the medical college as students prevented the Royal College principal and the representatives of the management from seeing the body.
The students alleged that the police did not extend any help in taking the body of Shaheen out of the well. They also said the college management was responsible for calling the police into the hostel.
CPM Thrissur district secretary A.C. Moideen called for a judicial probe into the incident. He also sought the suspension of the police officials responsible and a probe into the role of the college management.
“The lathicharge in the hostel was unwarranted,” he said in a statement. The Kunnamkulam police registered a case of unnatural death.
