Suicide bid for special status
Mr Naidu told the media that it was unfortunate that Subbarao attempted suicide seeking special status
Vijayawada: A man attempted suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling in his home in Vijayawada on Saturday, over the delay in Andhra Pradesh being granted special status.
Earlier, a Congress worker, Muni Koti Reddy, had immolated himself over denial of special status, at a Congress meeting in Tirupati on August 9.
Chavali Subbarao, father of two, was found hanging by his family members who brought him down and rushed him to a hospital in Pamarru.
Subbarao was later shifted to a private hospital in Vijayawada for better treatment. Police found a note in which he demanded special status to AP so that his chances of getting a job could improve.
“I tried for job many times earlier. I could not get even loan to buy an autorickshaw. I expected a job with special status but it looks like there is no chance so I am committing suicide,” the note read.
The news sent shockwaves in the city, prompting Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to visit Subbarao in the hospital.
Later, Mr Naidu told the media that it was unfortunate that Subbarao attempted suicide seeking special status.
“Subbarao is keen on getting a job. He also ensured his wife completes her degree course recently. His brother is a teacher,” Mr Naidu said.
“It is saddening that he attempted suicide. I spoke to the doctors and they said he can be saved,” he said. Mr Naidu appealed to the people not to resort to such steps.
Subbarao drives a rented autorickshaw for his livelihood. He is a former scribe who worked for vernacular daily in Pamarru.
AP Congress chief N. Raghuveera Reddy expressed concern over the incident. He too requested the public not to resort to such steps.
