No special drive to remove hoardings in Thiruvananthapuram

Several drives were held in the past to put an end to this growing menace posed by hoardings
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A growing number of political hoardings and banners continue to deface every nook and corner of the state capital while the City Corporation and the authorities concerned turn a blind eye. Unscientifically located hoardings are posing a threat to pedestrians and motorists alike.
With local polls round the corner, political parties are on a spree to put up banners and flex boards to publicise their achievements.
While the authorities including the district administration and police are very keen to remove other encroachments, when it comes to hoardings, however, they remain inactive as the hoardings and flex boards are mostly political announcements. Several drives were held in the past to put an end to this growing menace posed by hoardings.
Architect G Shankar said that the hoardings, flex board industry were fast growing in Kerala. “It’s unfortunate that putting up huge hoardings has become a big social trend in our state. It’s no doubt taking away the charm of the state capital,” lamented Mr Shankar. He said that the size of hoardings and banners were becoming bigger.
“It’s really sad that the corporation authorities are allowing this trend. Everybody talks a lot about banning plastics and interestingly these flex boards and hoardings are being made using cheap plastic,” added Mr Shankar.
When asked about removing hoardings, a top official of the Corporation said that it was not a priority as the term was going to end very soon.
