DMK will form govt in 2016, enforce prohibition: MK Stalin
M Karunanidhi said smaller neighbouring states are developing and Tamil Nadu is seriously lagging behind
Chennai: Trying to keep the prohibition debate alive and exert more pressure on the ruling party, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin on Saturday said the DMK would form government in 2016 and definitely enforce prohibition.
“We (DMK) will form government in 2016. Kalaignar will be the chief minister. He will definitely ink his name to enforce prohibition. No one can prevent it from happening,” Stalin thundered, as thousands of party women’s wing members who had organised the pro-prohibition rally near Padappai in Kancheepuram, received it with deafening applause.
Retracing the history of prohibition in the state, Stalin reiterated that the DMK had only deferred prohibition in 1972 and it subsequently reintroduced prohibition in 1974. “It was late MGR’s AIADMK government that had reopened arrack and toddy shops in 1981 and allowed production of Indian made foreign liquor in 1983, which was followed by nationalisation of liquor by Jayalalithaa in 2003,” Stalin noted.
Party president M Karunanidhi said smaller neighbouring states are developing and Tamil Nadu is seriously lagging behind. He appealed to his cadres and people not to rely on the Centre or the Constitution to steer the course and protect the state.
Seizing the opportunity to hit out at the PMK, the DMK headquarters secretary Duraimurugan said, “Some people (PMK) are claiming that they have been demanding prohibition for 28 years. Even people in their home have not heard of it. It was only after Kalaignar issued a statement, everyone started talking about enforcing prohibition.”
